In Ispra, mornings begin with light rising gently over Lake Maggiore and end with sunsets that paint the sky in shades of gold and rose. From the quiet streets, you can hear footsteps, laughter, the clinking of glasses from nearby terraces, and sometimes the distant echo of church bells from neighboring villages. A small place — but one with a big heart.
On November 11th, 2025, Ispra was gifted with one of those exceptionally clear autumn days when even Dufourspitze (4,634 m), the highest peak of Monte Rosa, was visible from the town. Against this backdrop, a group of curious and creative minds gathered at the Clubhouse for an experience that combined learning, design, and community: the workshop “Master the Power of Canva”, organized by EMPOWER JRC.
When Curiosity Meets Creativity
The workshop began with a simple yet powerful idea: creativity is not a privilege — it’s a form of expression everyone can access.
As participants opened Canva on their laptops and tablets, they weren’t just learning how to design—they were discovering how to translate ideas into visuals that speak to emotion and meaning.
In today’s digital world, visuals shape communication faster and more deeply than words. According to cognitive psychology, images are processed up to 60,000 times faster than text — and this insight set the tone for the entire session. Participants explored the psychology of color, typography, and visual storytelling, discovering how each shape and hue carries emotion and purpose.
Blue for trust and calm.
Green for balance and growth.
Yellow for optimism.
Red for passion.
Black and white for simplicity and clarity.
Design became a language of empathy — a way to communicate with the heart.
An “Aha” Moment: The QR Code Discovery
Every creative session has its “aha moment.”
During the Canva workshop, that moment came when participants generated and integrated a QR code directly into their designs — a simple yet impactful example of how creativity and technology merge effortlessly. The excitement was palpable as participants saw how a digital tool could instantly connect their designs to real-world experiences: an event, a website, a message.
That small detail — a square of pixels — became a metaphor for what EMPOWER stands for: connection, collaboration, and sharing.
Learning by Doing — and by Sharing
The workshop was not just a class; it was a collaborative playground. Participants worked side by side, exchanged feedback, helped one another troubleshoot design questions, and celebrated each small success.
It didn’t matter if someone was creating a visual CV, a social media post, an invitation for a family event, or an email signature — what mattered was the joy of learning by doing.
Canva’s collaborative features made the learning process even more dynamic, showing how multiple people can design together within a single project. This echoed EMPOWER’s own philosophy: we grow faster and stronger when we create together.
Colors, Conversations, and Connection
After the workshop, most participants stayed for lunch — an informal continuation of the creative energy that had filled the morning. Over shared meals and conversation, new friendships formed. Some participants were attending an EMPOWER event for the first time, while others were already familiar faces within the community.
These moments of connection — laughter, curiosity, encouragement — are the foundation of community building. They may seem small, but they are essential steps in creating a supportive network of people who learn from, and with, each other.

The Power of a Supportive Network
EMPOWER JRC is more than a professional network — it’s a living ecosystem of support, learning, and collaboration. Founded in 2019 by Aneta Skwarek-Maruszewska and Danai Tsapikidou, EMPOWER was created to help JRC Ispra staff partners and spouses connect, grow, and overcome the challenges of relocation and career transition.
Through its working groups in Communications, Events, Membership, and Collaborative Space, EMPOWER offers a vibrant environment where ideas turn into projects, and projects into friendships.
The Clubhouse Collaborative Space, open several days a week, has become a meeting point for creativity, skill-sharing, and collaboration.
With more than 130 members from over 20 countries, EMPOWER reflects the multicultural heart of Ispra — diverse, welcoming, and inspiring.
Beyond Design: What Participants Took Away
By the end of the session, participants didn’t just learn Canva’s interface or its AI-powered tools. They discovered something more personal:
- how to express their ideas visually,
- how to communicate emotion through design,
- and how creativity can be a bridge — between cultures, professions, and people.
As one participant shared, “Canva isn’t just a tool — it’s a way to see my own ideas come alive.”
The workshop reminded everyone that creativity is not about perfection — it’s about participation.
Each design tells a story, and every story adds a voice to the community.
